750ml vs 500ml Small Fire Extinguisher Spray

A 750ml fire extinguisher spray is not simply a 500ml product with more liquid.

The larger fill changes container volume, finished weight, headspace, pressure, discharge time and valve selection. For EN 16856 products, container construction is also a compliance issue.

1. 500ml vs 750ml Fire Extinguisher Spray

Both products use fluorine-free foam, nitrogen propellant and an internally coated aluminum monobloc container. Moving from 500ml to 750ml increases gross weight from 650g to 1,000g and discharge time from 19 to 25 seconds, while spray range remains 3-4m. The 750ml model also has a higher Class A rating. These are product-specific figures. Capacity alone does not determine pressure or spray range; valve, actuator and nozzle design also affect discharge.

2. Does a 750ml Fire Extinguisher Need a 750ml Can?

No. The 750ml normally refers to the extinguishing-agent charge, not the container’s brimful capacity; gas and thermal-expansion space are still required.

EN 15008 includes a one-piece aluminum size with 1,000ml brimful capacity, 750ml nominal fill, 74mm diameter and 263mm height – a practical starting point for a 750ml aerosol.

Final filling must still account for formulation, nitrogen charge, elevated-temperature pressure and headspace. At 50°C, the liquid phase must not exceed 90% of net capacity under the EU Aerosol Dispensers Directive. (fuente)

What About the Neck and Dimensions?

EN 15006 covers the 25.4mm aperture for aluminum aerosol containers and EN 15008 covers one-piece dimensions. Related standards address clinching and valve/contact dimensions. (fuente)

For procurement, request a technical drawing rather than specifying only 74 x 263mm. Confirm diameter and tolerance, total height, brimful capacity, shoulder/neck profile, aperture and clinch/contact dimensions.

3. Tinplate vs Aluminum Aerosol Can

Tinplate fire-extinguishing aerosol cans do exist and can be used where the applicable market or product requirements permit welded three-piece bodies. Aluminum monobloc is another common route.

The key distinction is EN 16856. For products intended to comply with this European standard, the body must be metallic and seamless, with a maximum total capacity of 1,000ml. Aluminum containers follow EN 15006 and EN 15008; seamless steel is also permitted. (fuente)

Therefore, conventional three-piece tinplate is not excluded as a fire-extinguishing aerosol format in general; it simply does not meet the EN 16856 seamless-body requirement. For an EN 16856 750ml project, one-piece aluminum is usually the more direct route.

Portable Fire Extinguishing Aerosol vs Conventional Steel Fire Extinguisher

Portable aerosols prioritize compact, quick-access use; larger steel extinguishers carry more agent for greater extinguishing capacity. The difference is product format and duty level, not simply aluminum versus steel.

Under EN 16856, seamless steel means a seamless aerosol body, not the steel pressure cylinder of a conventional extinguisher.

4. Pressure, Internal Coating and Formulation Compatibility

An RFQ should distinguish working, test and burst pressure rather than give only one pressure value.

For metal aerosols using non-flammable compressed gas such as nitrogen, the Aerosol Dispensers Directive allows up to 15 bar at 50°C. At 6.7 bar or above, empty-container test pressure must be at least 1.5 times internal pressure, and burst pressure at least 20% above test pressure. (fuente)

For a product around 10-11 bar at 20-25°C, confirm the final 50°C pressure before selecting the can rating. (fuente)

4.1 Internal Coating

PFAS-free water-based formulations should not be assumed compatible with bare aluminum. Internal lacquer may be required; one existing 750ml PFAS-free aluminum monobloc fire spray uses an anti-corrosion epoxy layer. (fuente)

Coating selection must be validated with the actual formula because surfactants, salts, pH and other ingredients can change compatibility.

4.2 PFAS-Free Formulations

Commission Regulation (EU) 2025/1988 restricts PFAS in firefighting foams and includes EN 16856 spray-can extinguishers within its portable-extinguisher definition. For most portable extinguishers, affected PFAS-containing foam may only be placed on the market until 23 October 2026. (fuente)

A PFAS-free change does not itself indicate higher or lower corrosion risk; packaging compatibility should be revalidated.

5. EN 16856: Finished Product vs Container Documentation

EN 16856 covers non-refillable portable fire-extinguishing aerosols. Key container requirements include a metallic seamless body, maximum total capacity of 1,000ml, suitable closure and valve construction, and corrosion resistance. Aluminum bodies follow EN 15006 and EN 15008. (fuente)

A bare aluminum bottle is not, by itself, an EN 16856 fire extinguisher. Performance testing applies to the finished dispenser with formulation, nitrogen, valve and actuator.

From the can supplier, request the technical drawing, alloy and empty-can weight, test and burst-pressure data, internal coating specification, quality certificates and relevant pressure-test records.

6. What Changes When Moving from 500ml to 750ml?

Moving from 500ml to 750ml changes the can, pressure system, valve and formulation requirements. Treat the 750ml version as a new pressure-pack configuration, not simply a larger fill.

Review these points:

  • container dimensions, capacity and finished weight;
  • headspace, nitrogen charge and pressure ratings;
  • valve/nozzle configuration and discharge performance;
  • coating, formulation compatibility and applicable EN requirements.

Production lines capable of manufacturing 750ml aerosol cans are relatively uncommon, as many conventional aerosol can production lines are designed primarily for capacities up to around 500ml.
