Frequently asked Questions

What Types of Aluminum Easy Open Ends Are Available?

Aluminum easy open ends are typically grouped into a few practical categories:

By size: 200 (≈50 mm, slim cans), 202 (≈52 mm, standard/sleek), plus larger 206 / 209 / 300 for specialty formats
By tab type: Stay-On-Tab (SOT) and Ring-Pull Tab (RPT)
By opening size: Small Opening (SOE), Large Opening (LOE), and Full Aperture (FA)
By design model: B64 (traditional), CDL (lighter-weight), and newer designs like SuperEnd and ISE

Most beverage cans today use 202 SOT ends, with CDL or SuperEnd variants for weight reduction.

Typical EOE sizes are defined by end codes, with several key dimensions used in production:

200 end: outer diameter ≈ 50.0 mm; curl height ≈ 2.0 mm; countersink depth ≈ 6.0–6.3 mm
202 end: outer diameter ≈ 52.4–52.5 mm; curl height ≈ 2.0 mm; countersink depth ≈ 6.0–6.6 mm
206 end: outer diameter ≈ 60.0 mm; curl height ≈ 2.1 mm; countersink depth ≈ 6.5–7.0 mm

Small variations are normal across suppliers. In practice, outer diameter + countersink depth are the key parameters for seaming performance.

The can body (sidewall and bottom) is typically made from 3004 or 3104 aluminum alloy, chosen for its balance of formability and strength, with manganese and magnesium improving pressure resistance after drawing and ironing. The can end uses a different alloy, usually 5182, with higher magnesium content to increase hardness and buckle resistance—needed to hold internal pressure and maintain seal integrity. Different alloys for body and end isn’t optional; it’s how the can meets both forming and performance requirements.

The internal and external coatings of aluminum two-piece cans are tested for quality:

Curing Test: Coatings must be fully cured, showing no discoloration, bubbling, or peeling after exposure to sterilization processes.

Adhesion Test: Coatings must adhere strongly, with no peeling when subjected to adhesion tests (e.g., using adhesive tape after scoring).

Sterilization Resistance: Coatings must remain intact and functional after sterilization processes, ensuring compatibility with food or beverage contents. These tests ensure the coatings protect the can and its contents effectively.

Aluminum two-piece cans undergo rigorous quality inspections:

Dimensional Inspection: Specialized gauges measure can height, diameter, and EOE dimensions to ensure compliance with specifications.

Visual Inspection: Conducted under natural light at a 60 cm distance to check for surface defects, printing quality, and coating integrity.

Physical Tests: Include axial load and internal pressure tests to verify structural integrity.

Coating Tests: Assess curing, adhesion, and sterilization resistance to ensure coating performance. These inspections ensure consistent quality and reliability.

202, 204, and 211 are series numbers for beverage can diameters, based on inches (whole inches + sixteenths).

202 (Slim): 2 + 2/16 = 2.125 inches ≈ 54 mm.
204 (Sleek): 2 + 4/16 = 2.25 inches ≈ 57.15 mm.
211 (Standard): 2 + 11/16 = 2.6875 inches ≈ 68.26 mm (often 65–66 mm).
Calculation: Inches = X + Y/16, then millimeters = inches × 25.4. Exact values may vary slightly per standards

How should I choose between standard, sleek, and slim cans?

Choose the can based on your product and production setup.

Use a standard can for mass-market drinks such as carbonated soft drinks, beer, and juice. It is the most common option and the easiest to run on existing filling and packing lines.

Use a sleek can when you want a taller, cleaner look for premium sodas, seltzers, kombuchas, or craft beer. It keeps the same 202 end as a standard can, so it usually needs fewer production changes.

Use a slim can for energy drinks, ready-to-drink coffee, wine, or other portion-controlled beverages. It looks more distinct, but it also needs a 200 end and more specific packaging support.

As a rule of thumb: if you want the simplest setup, choose standard. If you want a modern look with low production impact, choose sleek. If you need a narrow, portable format and can handle extra sourcing steps, choose slim.

The main options are traditional epoxy liners and BPA-NI liners. Epoxy liners have a long performance record and are still widely used in markets like the U.S., where they remain legally accepted. BPA-NI liners are typically selected for regions with stricter rules — for example, the EU, where BPA in can coatings is being phased out. The choice comes down to beverage pH, carbonation, shelf life, filling conditions, and export markets. If your product may enter the EU, start with BPA-NI. If not, epoxy is often the lower-risk option from a process standpoint.

B64 is the standard can end. It is thicker, widely compatible with existing seaming equipment, and is commonly used on standard beer and soft drink lines. CDL uses a specialized double-seam design. It is lighter and can improve seal performance, but it usually needs the correct chuck, roller profile, and seamer settings. Choose B64 if your line is already set up for it and you want straightforward production. Choose CDL if you want lower material use or a tighter seal, and your line can handle the setup change.

Aluminum cans are lighter than glass, less likely to break, and provide a better barrier against light and oxygen than PET bottles. That helps protect flavor and carbonation, cuts shipping weight, and supports recycling. For single-serve drinks, these are the main advantages of aluminum cans for beverages.

Shrink sleeves:
Used when full 360° coverage is needed. Typical MOQ is around 50,000–300,000 cans per SKU. The film is printed first, then heat-shrunk onto the can. It works well for complex graphics and medium runs.

Digital direct printing:
Best for short runs and frequent design changes. Typical economic range is about 1,000–50,000 cans per SKU. Print speed is usually around 50–100 cans per minute. It prints directly on aluminum, supports fine detail and variable data, but throughput is lower than conventional high-volume lines.

Traditional printed cans:
Used for high-volume production. MOQ is often 300,000+ cans per SKU. Line speed can exceed 2,000–3,000 cans per minute. The print is stable and efficient, but artwork changes are less flexible once plates are made.

Pressure-sensitive labels, including thermal labels:
Common for small batches, often around 1,000–50,000 cans per SKU. They are easy to apply and flexible for short runs. Thermal labels are mainly used for dates, codes, and other variable information. Their image durability and color range are more limited than direct printing or shrink sleeves.

If the design is fixed and volume is high, use printed cans.
If artwork changes often or includes variable data, labels or digital are usually the better fit.
